Water Security Agency Issues Advisory Conditions Exist for Potential Ice Jams
Today, the Water Security Agency (WSA) is advising the public of the potential for ice jamming along the North Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan rivers, and smaller systems within the currently impacted High Flows Advisory areas.
While no specific ice jams have been reported, the potential for ice jams and localized flooding can still occur.
Spring runoff and rapidly rising temperatures earlier in the week, combined with recent heavy precipitation, has raised the potential for ice jams to form. Ice jams can cause localized flooding as they disrupt water flows upstream and downstream.
WSA will continue monitoring conditions and will provide updates as conditions develop.
Regular updates on the spring runoff can be found here.
The Emergency Flood Damage Reduction Program (EFDRP) program helps implement emergency flood protection measures for communities, rural municipalities, businesses, non-profit organizations, individuals with rural yard sites, country residences, cottages and drinking water wells to prevent damage from imminent risk of flooding.
In addition to EFDRP, the Government of Saskatchewan has support for disaster-related costs through the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP). Information and criteria can be found on the PDAP website.
Residents are asked to use caution around flowing water and stay off ice jams if you encounter one as they can move or shift unexpectedly.
