Lake Diefenbaker Forecast Overview

  • Lake Diefenbaker inflows are expected to remain relatively steady through the weekend and start increasing next week due to mountain snowmelt and precipitation forecasted for the mountain/headwater regions over the next 5 days.
  • Releases from Lake Diefenbaker are being increased from 150 m3/s to 200 m3/s starting today (May 28th) and will be further increased from 200 m3/s to 240 m3/s starting tomorrow.
  • Current reservoir elevation is near 552.7 m, with a gradual increase expected over the next week.
  • Actual inflows and downstream flows will depend on the amount, timing, and location of rainfall received in the mountain and headwater regions over the next 5 days.

Hydrologic Conditions

  • Up to 20 mm precipitation was recorded in the headwaters of the North and South Saskatchewan River basins from May 25–27.
  • Forecast precipitation over the next 5 days is expected to be highest along the eastern mountains, with approximately 50–100 mm forecast for the eastern mountain regions and approximately 40–80mm forecast across most Alberta. Saskatchewan is expected to receive less than 50 mm over the same period. This may increase runoff into the South Saskatchewan River system, particularly if rainfall occurs at higher elevations.
