Government of Saskatchewan Remains Committed to Protecting Saskatchewan’s Water Resources in the 2026-27 Provincial Budget
The Water Security Agency (WSA) is continuing its commitment to protecting and strengthening the province’s water resources through significant investments in the 2026–27 Provincial Budget. This year’s budget invests over $130 million in water management infrastructure, economic development, and clean, safe, reliable water for Saskatchewan people.
“Our government remains focused on protecting Saskatchewan’s water resources that are vital to communities, producers and industry,” said Minister Responsible for the Water Security Agency David Marit.
This year, WSA is investing $39 million in capital projects that maintain and upgrade critical water infrastructure across the province.
Highlights in the 2026–27 Budget include:
- Replacement of the Cowan Lake Dam structure,
- Improvements to the Lafleche Dam spillway, and
- Refurbishment of pumps at the Eastside Pump Station
Recognizing the importance of irrigation to Saskatchewan producers and rural communities, WSA is also investing $19 million in irrigation expansion and development as part of its capital plan.
“Expanding irrigation is a key commitment in our government’s Growth Plan,” said Marit. “In fact, since 2020, we have added 108,000 irrigated acres, surpassing our target of 85,000 new irrigated acres by 2030.”
Irrigation helps diversify Saskatchewan’s crops, makes existing acres more efficient and productive, and protects against uncertainty in growing conditions.
WSA owns and operates more than 70 dams and water control structures, as well as hundreds of kilometers of canals and channels. WSA also regulates drinking water and wastewater, and helps protect water quality and quantity in Saskatchewan.
