Public Notice: Battle Creek (Wilson) Weir Replacement and Fishway Project

The Water Security Agency (WSA) will be completing major upgrades to the weir along Battle Creek, 49° 26′ 47 N, 109° 38′ 50 W, and has applied for approval under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.

Work includes demolition of the old weir, construction of a new weir and fishway, regrading portions of the diversion canal and adding rip rap as erosion protection. The work will start in early November 2025 and is expected to be completed by next spring 2026.

The work is being completed to:

  • ensure continued uninterrupted service from the structure;
  • restore upstream passage for the plain sucker species, which is an endangered species under the Species At Risk Act;
  • improve and protect fish habitat;
  • address age-related defects and bring the structure up to modern public safety standards;
  • improve erosion control along the canal; and
  • upgrade and enhance operations.

WSA does not anticipate any impact to recreational users in the area during construction.
