Private Development in Irrigation Expansion Areas
Considering a Private Irrigation Development in an Expansion Area?
If you are considering developing a private irrigation project within an area identified for future irrigation expansion, there are several important factors to consider before proceeding.
Private irrigation developments must:
- Meet all existing legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Not restrict, interfere with, or increase costs associated with future irrigation expansion projects.
- Be evaluated based on factors such as project size, location, timing and potential impacts on future expansion infrastructure.
Projects that are less likely to affect planned irrigation expansion areas may have a greater likelihood of proceeding. This can include projects that are not expected to connect to a future expansion project for two or more years.
The intent is to balance opportunities for producers to pursue private irrigation developments while protecting the planning, investment and long-term viability of larger irrigation expansion projects that benefit Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector.
Before You Apply
Producers considering irrigation development within a planned expansion area are encouraged to contact the Ministry of Agriculture and the Water Security Agency early in the planning process to discuss project considerations and requirements.
